Bangkok
No pictures this time I'm afraid, but as soon as I have the chance I post some more. I'm sitting at Bangkok Airport where my plane is delayed nearly 2.5 hours and thought I'd spend some time on the old internet.
Bangkok is amazing, the contrast between the extravagance of the touristy areas, malls, subway, temples and the palace contrast so sharply with the extreme poverty of the people, and everything is so cheap!
Yesterday (5/6/06) I visited the Imperial Palace. Wow! This place is just the definition of magnificence. Everything sparkles, often from gold leaf, and the shear scale of the beautiful Thai decorations is amazing. There's about 30 buildings squeezed in and in every direction you look you're surrounded by flourishing pillars, roofs and entranceways. You can go right up to almost all of it and walk around like it was just a shopping mall although there are guards everywhere. I'll post photos as soon as I can but this place has to be seen to be believed!
Keep your emails and comments coming. I will reply to everything, it just might take me a while! Oh, and if you want postcards you'll need to send me you postal address as I only have the contact details for a very few people, mostly family, at this point.
